ROBINSON

DRACONIS MARCH

FEDERATED SUNS

15 MARCH 3152

Despite Justin and Tuorto’s concerns, things moved quickly for them. They managed to lift off from Plymouth within two days as anticipated, and Erik had arranged for a JumpShip stationed at the nadir jump point to be ready for departure when they arrived several days later. Jumping from Plymouth to Robinson had taken nearly a month, even in a ship with a lithium-fusion battery, but they eventually arrived in-system.

Upon identifying themselves to the picket commander, their DropShip moved in-system without an escort, and when they landed at the spaceport, a handpicked group of local dignitaries, apparently carefully selected by Tuorto during planetfall, greeted them with great pomp and circumstance.

The baroness had been invited, of course, but had begged off, sending Count Egret in her stead. The count had been respectful and noncommittal, but both Justin and Tuorto had greeted him warmly, including him in their initial discussions upon arriving to the planet, although they did not ask him to stay for any of the late-night conversations with other dignitaries.

For all his suspicions of Tuorto, Justin had to admit the man’s efforts bore fruit. By allowing themselves to be treated as visiting royalty, they underscored Erik’s own reputation in the system, which helped lay the groundwork for the next phase of their mission. There was no question in their minds who was truly the Duke of Robinson, and it was their task to confirm that to the planet’s citizens.

The mysterious nature of their arrival brought a barrage of questions: Did they come with news from the First Prince? Was Erik planning to return? Had all been lost? The questions came from every angle, and in response, Justin merely smiled and recited the non-responses Tuorto had prepared for him during their inbound journey.

Time was their friend, at least in the beginning. By making sure everyone focused on them, they could keep Colleen off-balance and hopefully gain more information about the political arena on Robinson.

It helped that Tuorto’s plan was not dependent on recognition by the baroness at all. Aside from the visit by Count Egret, it seemed she had completely overlooked them, intentionally giving their arrival no special fanfare. Several local dignitaries maintained a studied reserve, not wanting to get involved until they knew which way the winds were blowing, but the majority allowed their curiosity to get the better of them. As some of the Sandoval loyalists made their preferences known, the battle lines being drawn became more noticeable. It was only a matter of time before the baroness would either have to do something or concede the field.
